Accessibility for the Disabled

The Beitar Ilit municipality sees providing accessibility for the disabled as an inseparable part of urban development.

The development of greater accessibility for the disabled and the handicapped to public sites includes: parks, educational institutions, public institutions and more. Even prior to the passing of the Accessibility Law, the municipality made all public buildings accessible to strollers, due to the large percentage of children in the city. Many playgrounds and parks in the city are accessible to strollers and to the disabled, and have been adjusted to contain any equipment used by the handicapped.

Upon the request of the mayor, all parks and passageways in the city are to undergo changes to provide more accessibility, despite the difficult layout of the city, which is situated on a mountain.  Many resources have been utilized for this sake.

All educational institutions in the city have been built with accessibility to all, with added ramps at the entrances. In one school, the municipality has even added an elevator to all floors of the building for one little girl who suffers from a certain handicap. At least 10% of all new housing units on Hill B have been built with accessibility to the disabled, and ramps have been added to all entrances.

The municipality is currently working on expanding the accessibility for the disabled throughout the city in various places, such as sidewalks and bus-stops, 50% of which have already been built with greater accessibility.
