The Economic Development Corporation of Beitar Ilit employs an external consulting firm, and together with other authorities – such as the sanitation department, the education department and the city engineer – is advancing several environmental projects in the city. The activities of the consulting firm are administered according to a specific, individual plan that is constantly reviewed. With the initial employment of the firm, it conducted a basic study of the given situation, and set a list of priorities to advance all environmental projects in the city.
Energy efficiency was declared as one of the prime goals in advancing ecological causes in the city. Initial efficiency goals were set and sample activities were conducted as pilot projects, which were to be duplicated if successful.
The first project to be carried out was the street lighting efficiency project. In a joint effort with the electricity and maintenance department of the Beitar Ilit municipality, a comprehensive study was conducted on lighting alternatives and the prime location of implementing the pilot project. A leading alternative was chosen as was the location. The installation is currently being completed.
An additional project currently in its final stages is the school efficiency project. In cooperation with the education department, several schools were chosen as the primary location for the pilot project. An energy study was conducted at the chosen schools and the extent of the project was determined. Within the framework of the project, efficiency will be upgraded in lighting and air-conditioning through the installation of unique control sensors. Moreover, efficiency will be reviewed in the local Mikvas.
The municipality has also begun an in-depth study of public rooftops to advance the incorporation of renewable energy systems.
Water Conservation Efforts
Effective management and handling of wastewater – in cooperation with the Economic Development Corporation and the external consulting firm, the municipality is currently conducting a thorough study of efficiency potential in wastewater recycling.
Reduction and Separation of Waste - Preparation of Master Plan for Waste Treatment
The municipality has decided on a waste treatment master plan, in which waste will be separated into two compartments. In cooperation with an external contractor, a master plan is being built according to the required criteria. At present, 100 recycling containers for bottles and 25 containers for cardboard and paper collection have been put up throughout the city.
The next step:
a pilot program of paper, cardboard and bottle recycling will soon be launched. In addition to the existing containers, the project will see containers for paper collection in every apartment building and expanded supply of cardboard and bottle collection containers. Should the pilot project be successful, containers for additional products will be added. The pilot project will come with the appropriate awareness campaign.
